On the evening of Friday, July 1st, my breath was taken away when I learned that a friend of mine passed through the Veil.It feels surreal at this point; it hasn’t yet sunk in that this 30-year old Mom of 3, wife, and fabulous fellow Aries is gone.
Whenever I think of Britany McCoy, the first thing that pops into my head is her jamming out and jumping around and dancing to Rihanna’s “S & M”. She loved that song and so it was her ringtone on my cell. And it’s heart-wrenching to realize that the last time I heard that ringtone was when she called me on June 5th to let me know she was at my front door (because I couldn’t hear the doorbell over the music blaring through my house speakers.) That there will be no more Britany pop-ins to ask her friend the RN a question, see if my boys and I want to join her with her boys at the pool, having pizza dinners with our families in my front yard, or sharing heart-to-hearts about our lives.
Tonight, however, as I thought of Britany, what came to mind was a song from a soundtrack that came out six years before she was even born; a song that she and I never had the chance to share – likely because I haven’t thought of it in decades. I don’t even know if she ever saw the movie Fame. But I found myself singing it as I looked through the photos on her Facebook page, and realized… The lyrics… fit her. And I could almost hear her cracking up over its classically cheesy 80s dramatic score.
Brit, Girl… This one is for you. I’ll miss you. ?
I sing the body electric
I celebrate the me yet to come
I toast to my own reunion
When I become one with the sunAnd I’ll look back on Venus
I’ll look back on Mars
And I’ll burn with the fire of ten million stars
And in time, and in time we will all be starsI sing the body electric
I glory in the glow of rebirth
Creating my own tomorrow
When I shall embody the earthAnd I’ll serenade Venus
I’ll serenade Mars
And I’ll burn with the fire of ten million stars
And in time, and in time we will all be stars
We are the emperors now and we are the czars
And in time, and in time we will all be starsI sing the body electric
I celebrate the me yet to come
I toast to my own reunion
When I become one with the sunAnd I’ll look back on Venus
I’ll look back on Mars
And I’ll burn with the fire of ten million stars
And in time, and in time we will all be stars
And in time, and in time we will all be stars
